History

British Airways was formed on 31 March 1974 through the merger of the state carriers BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) and BEA (British European Airways) along with two smaller regional airlines, Cambrian Airways and Northeast Airlines, under a British Airways Board created in 1972 to manage the transition. The airline was privatized in 1987, and in 1998-1999 it co-founded the oneworld alliance alongside American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas. In January 2011, BA merged with Iberia to form the International Airlines Group (IAG), taking a 55% share of the new holding company.

Current Operations

British Airways' main hub is London Heathrow, with further operations from London Gatwick and London City, serving a long/medium/short-haul network to around 70 countries, including significant transatlantic service to the United States. Its fleet mixes Airbus narrowbody and widebody aircraft with Boeing 777s and 787s. BA is a founding oneworld member and part of the IAG group alongside Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Vueling.
