Calgary International Airport began life in 1938 as McCall Field, named for WWI flying ace Fred McCall, and grew from a modest municipal airfield into WestJet's global headquarters and hub. A $1.6 billion international terminal opened in 2016, and the airport's Runway 17L/35R, completed in 2014, is the longest runway in Canada, reflecting Calgary's role as a major transcontinental and international gateway for western Canada.
The City of Calgary purchases land north of the city for about $31,000 to build a new municipal airport, originally named McCall Field after WWI flying ace Fred McCall.
The airport's first runway opens on September 25, 1939, establishing scheduled air service to Calgary.
A modernized passenger terminal opens on June 2, 1956, described at the time as one of the most modern air terminals in Canada.
A $130 million facility replaces the 1956 terminal, forming the core of what remains the airport's domestic terminal.
WestJet Airlines is founded and begins operations from Calgary in February 1996, establishing its global headquarters and primary base at the airport.
Runway 17L/35R, at 14,000 feet the longest runway in Canada, is completed, enabling long-haul international flights.
