Founded in January 1911 by a private airship company, Hamburg Airport is widely cited as the oldest commercial airport in the world still operating on its original site. It survived two world wars — its original airship hangar burned down in 1916, and the airfield served as a staging point during the 1948 Berlin Airlift — before becoming a major postwar hub for Lufthansa, which began passenger flights there in 1955. In 2016, on the first anniversary of former West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt's death, the airport formally added his name in recognition of his decades-long ties to Hamburg aviation. Today it remains a mid-sized but historically significant European gateway, home to major Lufthansa Technik maintenance facilities.
Established in January 1911 through private funding (Hamburger Luftschiffhallen GmbH) on a 45-hectare site, initially built to serve airship operations.
The airport's original airship hangar, heavily used by German military forces in WWI, burned down in 1916.
Following renaming to Hamburg Airport under British occupation after WWII, the field served as a staging area during the 1948-49 Berlin Airlift.
Lufthansa launched scheduled passenger service from Hamburg in 1955, using it as a hub before Frankfurt's later expansion eclipsed it.
Pan American World Airways introduced the airport's first scheduled jet service using Boeing 707s in 1959.
As part of the 'HAM21' modernization program begun in the early 1990s, a new Terminal 1 and Airport Plaza opened in 2005, featuring curved wing-inspired ceilings.
On 10 November 2016, the first anniversary of former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt's death, the airport formally added 'Helmut Schmidt' to its name, honoring his role in Hamburg's aviation development, including helping establish Lufthansa's presence there in the 1950s.
