Malpensa's aviation history stretches back to 1910, when the Caproni brothers used the site to test early aircraft, and it grew into one of Italy's main aircraft manufacturing centers between the world wars. Civil passenger operations began on 21 November 1948, but the airport remained a secondary Milan gateway behind the more central Linate for decades. That changed in 1998, when a major expansion (including a new Terminal 1) turned Malpensa into Alitalia's primary international hub — a status the airline abandoned in 2008 when it consolidated long-haul operations at Rome Fiumicino, prompting operator SEA to launch an aggressive campaign that added dozens of new routes and other airlines to fill the gap. The airport sits within a protected nature reserve, the Parco Naturale Lombardo della Valle del Ticino, and today is Italy's second-busiest airport for passengers and its busiest for air cargo; in 2024 it was formally renamed to honor former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
On 27 May 1910, the Caproni brothers flew an early biplane from the Malpensa site, marking the beginning of aviation activity there decades before it became a civil airport.
Malpensa formally opened for civil aviation on 21 November 1948, after wartime damage from Luftwaffe occupation was repaired and the runway extended.
A major expansion including the new Terminal 1 opened in 1998, and Malpensa became Alitalia's primary intercontinental hub, dramatically raising the airport's international profile.
Alitalia pulled most of its long-haul operations out of Malpensa to consolidate at Rome Fiumicino; operator SEA responded with an aggressive marketing push that added 34 new routes between 2008 and 2011 to offset the loss.
A railway extension connecting Terminal 2 to the Malpensa Express line opened in December 2016, improving surface access to the airport's second terminal.
In July 2024, the airport was officially renamed 'Aeroporto Internazionale Milano Malpensa Silvio Berlusconi' in honor of the late Italian prime minister and media magnate.
