Airport HistoryEst. 2001

Incheon International Airport opened on 29 March 2001 on reclaimed land joining the islands of Yeongjong and Yongyu, about 48 km west of Seoul, after more than eight years of construction that began in November 1992. Built to give South Korea a world-class international gateway alongside the older, more central Gimpo Airport, Incheon quickly became the country's dominant international hub, handling the large majority of Korea's international passenger traffic. It expanded through several major phases — most notably the January 2018 opening of Terminal 2 — and became almost as well known for its extensive passenger amenities as for its size. Incheon topped Airports Council International's global service-quality rankings every year from 2005 to 2011 and has remained a fixture near the top of Skytrax's worldwide rankings ever since.

✦Incheon was built essentially from scratch on reclaimed land joining the previously separate islands of Yeongjong and Yongyu.
✦Its terminals are known for extensive passenger amenities — including an indoor ice-skating rink, a golf course and spa facilities — that helped build its reputation for passenger experience.
✦Incheon topped ACI's worldwide Airport Service Quality survey every year from 2005 to 2011, and was rated best airport in Asia-Pacific for a decade straight (2006–2016).
✦By 2025 the airport had crossed one billion cumulative passengers since opening, doing so faster than most of its global peers.
1992
Construction begins on reclaimed land

Work began in November 1992 to build a new international airport on land reclaimed between the islands of Yeongjong and Yongyu, after South Korea decided its existing Gimpo Airport could not meet future demand.

2001
Incheon International Airport opens

The airport opened on 29 March 2001 with two runways and Terminal 1, taking over as South Korea's primary international gateway from Gimpo Airport.

2005
Begins seven-year run atop global service rankings

Incheon topped Airports Council International's worldwide Airport Service Quality survey every year from 2005 to 2011, establishing its reputation for passenger experience.

2008
Phase 2 expansion completed

A second development phase, completed in June 2008, added a third runway and a new Concourse A with 32 gates.

2017
Fourth runway opens

A fourth runway opened on 17 June 2017 as part of continued capacity expansion ahead of Terminal 2's debut.

2018
Terminal 2 opens

Terminal 2 opened on 18 January 2018 after a multi-year, roughly ₩4 trillion investment, lifting the airport's capacity to about 62 million passengers and 5.8 million tonnes of cargo per year.

2025
Passes one billion cumulative passengers

Incheon crossed one billion cumulative passengers since opening, reaching the milestone faster than most comparable airports worldwide.
