Airport HistoryEst. 1962

Indira Gandhi International Airport is India's busiest airport and a major hub for South Asia, evolving from the Royal Air Force's wartime Palam airfield into a sprawling multi-terminal international gateway. It was renamed in 1986 in honour of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, and has since been transformed through a 2006 privatisation and the addition of Terminal 3, one of the largest airport terminals ever built. In recent years it has set national passenger records and become India's first airport to run entirely on renewable power.

✦IGI is India's busiest airport, handling a record 79.2 million passengers in FY 2024-25.

✦Terminal 3, opened in 2010, was the world's eighth-largest passenger terminal at the time of its completion.

✦Since 2022 it has run entirely on renewable hydro and solar power, a first for an Indian airport.

✦Its third runway includes one of the world's longest runway threshold displacements, due to nearby geographic constraints.

✦The airport is named after Indira Gandhi, India's first and to date only female prime minister.

✦It began life during World War II as RAF Palam, a Royal Air Force staging base, rather than as a civilian airport.

1962

Commercial operations move to Palam

Delhi's commercial passenger operations relocated from Safdarjung Airport to Palam Airport, the site later redeveloped into today's IGI Airport.

1972

Japan Airlines Flight 471 crash

A Japan Airlines DC-8 crashed on approach to Palam Airport in June 1972, killing most of those aboard, one of the deadliest accidents in the airport's history.

1986

Renamed Indira Gandhi International Airport

A new international terminal (Terminal 2) opened on 2 May 1986, and the airport was renamed Indira Gandhi International Airport after India's former prime minister.

1996

Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision

On 12 November 1996, a Saudia Boeing 747 that had just departed Delhi collided mid-air with an inbound Kazakhstan Airlines Il-76 near Charkhi Dadri, killing all 349 people aboard both aircraft — the deadliest mid-air collision in aviation history.

2006

Airport privatised

Management of the airport was transferred to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a consortium led by the GMR Group, ending direct state operation.

2010

Terminal 3 opens

A vast new Terminal 3 opened on 3 July 2010 ahead of the Commonwealth Games, becoming, at the time, the eighth-largest passenger terminal in the world.

2022

Fully renewable-powered

In June 2022, IGI Airport became India's first airport to run entirely on hydroelectric and solar power.

2024

Record passenger traffic

In FY 2024-25 the airport handled a record 79.2 million passengers and became India's first airport to connect directly to more than 150 destinations.
