Naples Capodichino traces its roots to a nineteenth-century military drill field that became one of Italy's earliest aviation sites, hosting demonstration flights in 1910 and serving as a frontline military airfield through two world wars. It transitioned to civilian traffic after 1950 and, in 1997, became the first Italian airport to be privatized, growing into the busiest airport in southern Italy.
On May 5, three foreign aviators and one Italian aviator carry out the first aircraft demonstration flights at the Campo di Marte drill field in Capodichino, marking the start of aviation activity at the site.
During World War I the airfield, defending against Austro-Hungarian and German air raids, is struck by a German Zeppelin bombing; the airfield is subsequently expanded.
Capodichino begins accepting civilian air traffic alongside its continuing military role, with the runway expanded to roughly 2,150 meters to support commercial services.
The company Gesac S.p.A. is founded to manage and develop Naples Airport's civilian operations.
British Airport Authority (BAA) acquires majority control of Gesac in August, making Naples the first Italian airport to be privatized; a second terminal building also opens the same year.
Italian infrastructure fund F2i takes over as the airport's controlling shareholder in December.
Terminal 2, opened in 1997, is demolished in September to make way for a planned metro station connection.
