Tokyo Haneda International Airport

Tokyo's first airport opened on reclaimed land beside Tokyo Bay, initially a small grass airfield serving domestic routes.

Following Japan's surrender, Haneda was taken over by the U.S. military and operated as Haneda Army Air Base, with full civil control not restored until the late 1950s.

The opening of New Tokyo International Airport (Narita) shifted nearly all of Tokyo's international service away from Haneda, which became primarily a domestic airport.

A new terminal building opened to handle Haneda's rapidly growing domestic traffic as Japan's air travel market expanded.

A new international terminal and a fourth runway (Runway D), built partly on landfill in Tokyo Bay, allowed Haneda to significantly expand international service after more than three decades of mostly domestic operations.

Japan introduced new approach routes over central Tokyo to increase Haneda's capacity ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, a change that drew public debate over noise.

On 2 January 2024, Japan Airlines Flight 516, an Airbus A350, collided on the runway with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft; all 379 people aboard the JAL jet evacuated safely before it was destroyed by fire, though five of the six coast guard crew died.
