Best use of a long layover

With 8+ hours, take the monorail or Keikyu line into central Tokyo (about 20-30 minutes to Hamamatsucho or Shinagawa) for Sensoji Temple in Asakusa or a walk through Shibuya, keeping at least a 2-hour buffer before your flight.

Inside the airport

Terminal 3 has the 24-hour TIAT Lounge (paid entry, showers included) and the Sky Lounge / Sky Lounge South (one with showers), open to any ticketed passenger regardless of airline; landside pay showers are also in the arrivals area.

The Royal Park Hotel Tokyo Haneda runs a dedicated Transit branch inside the Terminal 3 airside zone, bookable by the hour without clearing immigration — the only genuine no-visa sleep option for a long international-to-international layover; the First Cabin capsule hotel is landside in Terminal 1.

Citizens of 70+ countries (the US, UK, EU, Australia, and Canada among them) enter Japan visa-free for short tourist stays, so those travelers can simply clear immigration, go into Tokyo, and re-clear on return; travelers whose passport requires a Japan visa should not plan on leaving the airport, since there's no guaranteed same-day airport transit visa.
