Airport HistoryEst. 1975

Opened on April 12, 1975 by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing as Lyon-Satolas Airport, named for the village where it was built, the airport was renamed Lyon-Saint Exupéry in 2000 to honor Lyon-born aviator and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry on the centenary of his birth. In 1994 it became one of the first airports in the world with a dedicated high-speed rail station built directly into the terminal complex, served by a landmark canopy structure designed by architect Santiago Calatrava. A major terminal expansion completed in 2018 roughly doubled Terminal 1's size and capacity. Today it is one of France's leading regional airports outside the Paris system, operated by a Vinci-led consortium.
