Airport HistoryEst. 1948

Zurich Airport opened at Kloten in 1948, replacing the smaller Dübendorf airfield, and grew into Switzerland's largest and busiest airport. It was long the home base of Swissair, whose dramatic 2001 grounding was one of the most significant crises in the country's aviation history, before Swiss International Air Lines rose from its remains. Today it is the hub of Swiss International Air Lines and a major Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance gateway, known for its direct rail connection and automated Skymetro people mover.

✦Zurich's Skymetro is an automated, driverless underground train that carries passengers beneath the runways to the Dock E midfield terminal.
✦The airport has had a direct underground train station since 1980, letting travelers reach central Zurich in about ten minutes.

Kloten Airport opens

Kloten Airport opens near Zurich, replacing Dübendorf as Switzerland's principal civil airport.

New terminal complex

A large new terminal complex opens to handle rapidly growing postwar air travel demand.

1980
Direct rail link opens

An underground railway station opens beneath the terminal, connecting the airport directly into the Swiss national rail network, one of the earliest such integrations in Europe.

2001
Swissair grounding

Swissair, the national carrier long nicknamed "the Flying Bank," grounds its entire fleet on October 2 after running out of cash, stranding passengers worldwide and ending decades of operations.

2002
Swiss International Air Lines launches

Swiss International Air Lines begins operations from the remains of Swissair and Crossair, restoring Zurich's home carrier.

2003
Dock E and Skymetro open

Dock E (Midfield) opens along with Skymetro, an automated underground train connecting it to the main terminal beneath the runways.

2005
Joins Lufthansa Group

Swiss International Air Lines joins the Lufthansa Group and later the Star Alliance, cementing Zurich's role as a major European connecting hub.

2020
The Circle opens

The Circle, a large convention, hotel and office complex, opens adjacent to the airport as part of a major redevelopment.
