Airport HistoryEst. 1948

Stuttgart Airport traces its roots to a 1939 airfield at Echterdingen built to replace the older Böblingen field, reopening for civilian use after World War II and later sharing facilities with the U.S. Army during the Cold War. Wholly owned by the State of Baden-Württemberg and the City of Stuttgart, it has grown into one of Germany's busiest airports despite a still-incomplete recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

✦Stuttgart Airport shared its site with the U.S. Army's Echterdingen Army Airfield during the Cold War, with a U.S. aviation battalion headquartered there into the mid-1980s.

✦A 2008 government decision ruled out building a second runway for at least eight to twelve years, and the airport still operates on a single runway as of 2026.

1939

Echterdingen Airfield Built

An airfield at Echterdingen is built in 1939 to replace the smaller Böblingen Airport as Stuttgart's aviation site.

1948

Civilian Traffic Resumes

The airport reopens to civilian air traffic in 1948 after World War II, with its runway extended to 1,800 meters.

1996

Runway Extended to Nearly 3,350 Meters

The main runway is extended to 3,345 meters, enabling long-haul wide-body operations.

2004

Modern Terminal Complex Completed

The airport's original 1938-era terminal building is fully replaced by a modern four-terminal complex with capacity for around 12 million passengers a year.

2014

Renamed for Manfred Rommel

The airport is renamed 'Flughafen Stuttgart - Manfred Rommel Flughafen' in honor of the former Stuttgart mayor.

2016

Reverts to Stuttgart Airport

The official name reverts to the simpler 'Stuttgart Airport' in 2016.

2019

Record Annual Traffic

The airport records its highest-ever annual passenger total of about 12.72 million, ranking among Germany's busiest airports.

2020

COVID-19 Traffic Collapse

The COVID-19 pandemic causes passenger numbers to collapse from pre-pandemic peaks; traffic is still recovering years later, reaching about 9.1 million in 2024.

Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH1939 – presentState-owned operator; shares stem from the State of Baden-Württemberg and the City of Stuttgart. No private-equity ownership change has occurred, unlike several other German and UK airports.
