How to get to and from Stuttgart Airport — taxis, public transport, shuttles and car rental.
Transport Options at STR
Stuttgart Airport is connected to Stuttgart and the wider Germany transport network by multiple ground transport options.
S-Bahn lines S2 and S3 run directly from the airport (Flughafen/Messe station) to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof roughly every 15 minutes, taking about 25–30 minutes; the U6 stadtbahn (light rail) also serves the same station and is a useful alternative when S-Bahn service is disrupted.
Regional and long-distance coaches use the Stuttgart Airport Bus Terminal (SAB) next to the terminals, plus a night bus (N8) connecting to Schlossplatz in the city center when S-Bahn/U-Bahn service is reduced overnight.
A taxi rank is directly outside arrivals; the ride to central Stuttgart takes about 25–30 minutes and typically costs €35–45 depending on traffic and time of day.
Uber operates in the Stuttgart area in a limited form (mostly via licensed taxi partners under German regulations), so in practice a metered taxi is usually just as fast to arrange as booking a rideshare.
All major international rental brands operate from a dedicated car rental center a short walk from the terminals — well suited to the many visitors heading onward to the Black Forest, Swabian Alb or other regional day trips.
Check for planned S-Bahn engineering closures before you travel — Stuttgart's S-Bahn network periodically runs replacement bus service for maintenance, and the U6 light rail is the reliable backup route into the center when that happens.
