Airport HistoryEst. 1947

Edinburgh Airport began life in 1916 as a Royal Flying Corps air defense base at Turnhouse, shared military and civil aviation duties for decades, and is now Scotland's busiest airport. Ownership has changed hands repeatedly in the 21st century, moving from the state-linked British Airports Authority through private equity to a majority stake now held by French infrastructure group VINCI Airports.

✦Turnhouse Airport hosted The Beatles on their visits to Scotland in the 1960s, among many historic arrivals captured in period photographs.
✦Edinburgh became Scotland's first airport to pass 15 million annual passengers in December 2024.

Turnhouse Aerodrome Opens

Turnhouse Aerodrome opens as a Royal Flying Corps air defense base during the First World War, later becoming RAF Turnhouse and home to 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron.

1947
Commercial Aviation Begins

The airport opens for scheduled commercial traffic on May 19, 1947, with British European Airways service linking Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Shetland.

New Terminal Opened by the Queen

Queen Elizabeth II officially opens a new terminal, designed by Sir Robert Matthew, on May 27, 1977, following redevelopment work that included diverting the River Almond.

BAA Privatized

The British Airports Authority, which had owned Edinburgh since 1971, is privatized as BAA plc; annual passengers have grown from 681,000 in 1971 to over 1.8 million.

RAF Turnhouse Closes

The Royal Air Force's operational presence at Turnhouse, dating back to 1916, formally ends, leaving the airport fully civilian.

Global Infrastructure Partners Acquires Airport

Global Infrastructure Partners buys Edinburgh Airport from BAA for £807.2 million on April 23, 2012, as BAA is required to sell airports following a UK competition ruling.

Edinburgh Trams Open

The Edinburgh Trams network opens, giving the airport its first dedicated rail-style public transport connection to the city center.

2024
VINCI Acquires Majority Stake; 15 Million Passenger Milestone

VINCI Airports completes acquisition of a 50.01% stake from GIP (which retains 49.99%) for £1.27 billion on June 25, 2024; by December 2024 the airport becomes the first in Scotland to exceed 15 million annual passengers.
