Airport History
Catania's airport dates to 1924 as Sicily's first airfield, was rebuilt on a larger site in 1950, and served as a major Allied air base during the WWII Sicily campaign. Today it is Sicily's busiest airport and one of Italy's top hubs, though a serious fire in July 2023 forced weeks of disruption to operations.
Catania's airport is established, becoming the region's first airport and marking the start of aviation infrastructure in Sicily.
During the Sicily Campaign, Allied forces seize the airport; the US 340th Bombardment Group stations B-25 Mitchells there from August to November 1943, and the 51st Troop Carrier Wing headquarters operates from the field into 1944.
