Tenerife South Airport opened in November 1978 as the Canary Islands developed a second airport on Tenerife to relieve pressure on the fog-prone Tenerife North airport, whose difficult weather conditions had contributed to the catastrophic 1977 runway collision — history's deadliest aviation accident, which occurred at that separate facility, not at Tenerife South. Dedicated to Queen Sofía of Spain, Tenerife South has since grown into the second-busiest airport in the Canary Islands, driven largely by international leisure traffic.
Tenerife South Airport is inaugurated on November 6, 1978, by Queen Sofía of Spain; the first flight, Iberia IB187 from Lanzarote operated by a DC-9, lands at 10:17, just 20 months after the Tenerife North disaster increased pressure for a second, better-sited island airport.
International scheduled service begins in 1980 with Viasa flights to Caracas, Venezuela, establishing the airport's long-haul leisure-route pattern.
Sustained growth in northern European leisure traffic makes Tenerife South the second-busiest airport in the Canary Islands, behind only Gran Canaria.
United Airlines begins transatlantic service between Tenerife South and Newark, continuing through 2025 and marking rare direct North American connectivity for the island.
Air Canada is set to launch new North American routes to Tenerife South, further expanding transatlantic links; announced ahead of the 2026 season.
