Airport HistoryEst. 1958

Beijing Capital International Airport has served as mainland China's principal international gateway since the late 1950s, growing from a small airfield into one of the world's largest and busiest air hubs. Its Norman Foster-designed Terminal 3, built for the 2008 Olympics, was for a time the largest airport terminal building on Earth. Although it now shares Beijing's air traffic with the newer Daxing International Airport, PEK remains the principal base for Air China and a major Star Alliance hub.

✦Terminal 3, opened in 2008, was the largest airport terminal building in the world at the time of its completion, covering more than 1.3 million square meters.
✦Terminal 3's roof and color scheme were designed to evoke a dragon in traditional Chinese red and gold.
✦PEK was the world's second-busiest airport by passenger traffic for roughly a decade, trailing only Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta.
✦The airport is the primary hub for Air China and a major hub for the Star Alliance network.

Airport opens

Beijing Capital International Airport opens northeast of the city, becoming the People's Republic of China's primary gateway for international air travel.

1980
New terminal building

A new terminal opens to accommodate growing traffic as China begins opening to international travel and trade.

1999
Terminal 2 opens

A large second terminal opens ahead of the 50th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, roughly doubling the airport's capacity.

2008
Terminal 3 opens for the Olympics

Designed by Foster + Partners, Terminal 3 opens just months before the Beijing Summer Olympics and becomes, at the time, the largest airport terminal building in the world.

2010
Becomes world's second-busiest airport

PEK overtakes rivals such as Heathrow to become the world's second-busiest airport by passenger traffic, a ranking it holds for roughly a decade behind only Atlanta.

2013
Terminal 3 bombing

A disabled man detonates a homemade explosive device in the Terminal 3 arrivals area to protest a personal grievance, injuring only himself and prompting scrutiny of airport security.

2019
Beijing Daxing Airport opens

The new Beijing Daxing International Airport opens south of the city, taking over some airlines and routes and easing congestion at Capital Airport.

2020
COVID-19 pandemic disruption

International arrivals and passenger volumes collapse as China imposes strict pandemic border controls, sharply reducing traffic through the airport for several years.
