Hong Kong International Airport opened on 6 July 1998 on a purpose-built artificial island formed by flattening the islands of Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau and reclaiming surrounding seabed, replacing the famously cramped and dramatic Kai Tak Airport in the city center. Its opening was marred by severe computer and cargo-system failures that disrupted operations for weeks, but the airport quickly established itself as a major international hub, becoming the world's busiest cargo airport since 2010 and the home base for Cathay Pacific and several other Hong Kong carriers. It has weathered major disruptions, including extensive protest-related closures in 2019, and completed a large third-runway expansion in 2022. It is operated by the Airport Authority Hong Kong, a statutory body of the Hong Kong government established in 1995.
Construction of the new airport began on a massive land reclamation project that flattened the islands of Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau and added roughly 1% to Hong Kong's total land area — part of the wider 'Airport Core Programme.'
The airport opened on 6 July 1998, with Cathay Pacific flight CX889 from New York JFK among the first arrivals, replacing the constrained single-runway Kai Tak Airport in Kowloon. The opening was disrupted for weeks by severe flight-information-system and cargo-database failures.
A second terminal opened on 28 February 2007, initially focused on low-cost carrier and retail operations.
The permanent SkyPier cross-boundary ferry terminal opened, letting passengers transfer between flights and Pearl River Delta ferry destinations without formally clearing Hong Kong immigration.
The airport took the title of world's busiest airport by cargo traffic in 2010, a ranking it has held in most years since.
During Hong Kong's pro-democracy protests in August 2019, demonstrators occupied terminal areas on multiple occasions, forcing the airport to cancel flights and, on one day, suspend all check-ins — over 160 flights were cancelled in the most severe disruption.
A third runway opened in July 2022 as the centerpiece of a HK$141.5 billion expansion project, ultimately raising capacity toward roughly 620,000 flights per year.
