Ride the Airport Express (24 minutes to Central) and cross Victoria Harbour on the Star Ferry, or take the Ngong Ping 360 cable car to the Big Buddha on Lantau Island if you'd rather stay closer to the airport.

Inside the airport

Two 24-hour Plaza Premium Lounges bookend the terminal — West Hall near Gate 40 and East Hall near Gate 1 — both with shower rooms and private resting areas; a free Layover Tour desk (with Trip.com) near Transfer Desks E1 runs guided city routes for layovers over 7 hours. Note: HKIA's rebuilt Terminal 2 fully reopened in May 2026, so some facility locations and signage are still settling in — worth double-checking current gate/counter placement.

HKIA has no airside sleep-pod hotel; the closest options — the Regal Airport Hotel (connected via covered walkway) and Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott — are both landside and require clearing immigration to reach.

Hong Kong SAR runs its own immigration policy separate from mainland China — most Western, and many Asian and Latin American, passport holders can enter visa-free for anywhere from 7 to 180 days depending on nationality, which is a full entry allowance rather than a narrow transit-only exception, so a routine layover rarely needs paperwork; a handful of nationalities still need a visa even to transit, so check individually.

Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of Hong Kong before travel.

Practical Tips for Your HKG Layover

Use left-luggage storage at Hong Kong International Airport if you plan to leave the terminal — most airports offer coin lockers or staffed storage near arrivals.
