Airport HistoryEst. 1919

Geneva Airport traces its roots to 1919, when the Canton of Geneva approved a small airfield at Cointrin, near Meyrin. It grew steadily through the interwar and postwar decades into one of Switzerland's two major international gateways, distinguished by its unusual location straddling the Swiss-French border. Today it serves as the home base of Swiss International Air Lines and easyJet Switzerland, and functions as a European freight hub despite Switzerland's non-EU status. A binational arrangement dating to the 1960s lets French travelers reach the airport through a dedicated sector without crossing into Swiss customs.

✦Geneva Airport straddles the Swiss-French border, and a French sector (Secteur France) at Pier F, arranged under a 1960s Franco-Swiss agreement, lets travelers from France reach the airport without formally entering Switzerland.

Cointrin airfield opens

The Grand Council of Geneva approved an airfield at Cointrin, and a simple 54-hectare facility began operations the same year.

First concrete runway built

Geneva completed its first concrete runway (405m x 21m), replacing earlier grass and gravel surfaces.

1946
Postwar terminal opens and transatlantic service begins

A new terminal building opened as the airport recovered from wartime flight bans, and Swissair launched the airport's first transatlantic route to New York using a Douglas DC-4 in 1947.

Jet age arrives

An SAS Caravelle became the first jet aircraft to land at Geneva, on 17 July 1959, marking the start of jet operations.

First Boeing 747 lands

A Boeing 747 widebody landed at Geneva for the first time, reflecting the airport's growing long-haul capacity.

15 million annual passengers surpassed

Geneva exceeded 15 million passengers in a calendar year for the first time in December 2014.
