Geneva's Old Town and the Jet d'Eau are about 6-8 minutes by direct train from the airport station into Gare Cornavin, then a short walk or tram ride to the lake.

Inside the airport

Pick up the free public-transport ticket from the machine in the baggage hall before customs — it covers about 80 minutes on trains, buses, trams and the lake shuttle within Zone 10, and is one of GVA's best perks for a short layover into the city.

NH Geneva Airport is the closest option, about 500m from Terminal 1 via a covered walkway (no shuttle needed). Budget-friendly ibis Genève Aéroport is about 1.2km away with a free 24/7 shuttle roughly every 30 minutes.

Switzerland is in the Schengen Area, so standard Schengen short-stay visa rules apply — no separate transit visa is needed for landside access if you're already permitted a short Schengen stay. Note GVA has a dual-exit layout: one side leads into Switzerland/Geneva, the other toward France, each with its own passport control, so head for the correct exit.

Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of Switzerland before travel.
