Airport HistoryEst. 1961

Named for the Venetian merchant-explorer Marco Polo, Venice's modern airport had its foundation stone laid in March 1958 and was inaugurated on 31 July 1961 at Tessera on the mainland edge of the lagoon, replacing the historic Nicelli Airport on the Lido as the city's principal air gateway. Because Venice's historic center is car-free, the airport is one of the few in the world with direct water-taxi and public ferry (Alilaguna) access, alongside conventional road links. It is managed by SAVE S.p.A., a partially publicly owned, Milan-listed company that also operates nearby Treviso Airport.

✦The airport is named for Marco Polo (1254-1324), the Venetian merchant-explorer, even though commercial aviation postdates him by nearly six centuries.

✦Marco Polo is one of the few airports in the world with direct water-taxi and public ferry (Alilaguna) access straight into a historic city center, a direct consequence of Venice's car-free lagoon geography.

✦Its predecessor, Nicelli Airport on the Lido, opened in the 1920s and still operates today as a small grass-runway general-aviation field.

✦It was the first Italian airport to fully outsource all ground-handling operations to external companies.

✦A dedicated rail link connecting the airport directly to Venice Mestre station has been under construction since December 2023, with completion dates cited inconsistently across sources — treat any specific target as provisional as of 2026.

1961

Airport inaugurated

The new airport at Tessera, named for Marco Polo, is inaugurated on 31 July 1961, replacing the Lido's Nicelli Airport as Venice's main commercial gateway.

2002

Modern terminal opens

A roughly 60,000 sq m terminal designed by architect Gian Paolo Mar opens in July 2002 to accommodate growing traffic.

2016

Low-cost carrier wing added

A new wing on the terminal's south side, dedicated to low-cost carrier operations, opens in 2016.

2017

Landside area expanded

The arrivals/departures landside area is expanded, adding a moving walkway connecting to the multi-story car park.

2019

Becomes official hub for Italy's national football teams

In November 2019 the airport is designated the official hub airport for the Italian national football teams.

2022

Wizz Air establishes an operating base

Wizz Air opens an operational base at the airport in March 2022, expanding low-cost route options.

2023

Rail link construction begins

Construction begins in December 2023 on a new roughly 8 km rail link connecting the airport directly to Venice Mestre station. As of the 2026-08-29 reference date the project remains under construction; completion has been targeted variously for late 2025, 2026 or early 2027 across different sources, so any specific date should be treated as provisional.

Passenger traffic record

The airport handles about 11.85 million passengers in 2025, up 2.2% year-on-year and among the highest totals in its history.
