Las Vegas's main airport traces back to a small airfield known as Anderson Field, which opened in 1920 southeast of the city. It was renamed McCarran Field in 1941 in honor of Nevada Senator Pat McCarran, a powerful aviation-law advocate who helped secure funding for the airport's early growth, and it operated under that name for eight decades as Las Vegas boomed into a global tourism and gambling capital. On 14 December 2021, the Clark County Commission voted unanimously to rename the airport Harry Reid International Airport, honoring the late U.S. Senate Majority Leader for his role in securing federal funding for the airport's expansion, while also distancing the facility from McCarran's history of anti-immigrant and antisemitic legislative positions. Uniquely among major U.S. airports, it has offered slot machines to travelers for decades, a signature of the Las Vegas arrival experience.
A small airfield known as Anderson Field opened southeast of Las Vegas, the earliest predecessor of today's airport.
The airfield was renamed in honor of Nevada Senator Pat McCarran, an influential figure in U.S. aviation legislation who sponsored laws including the Civil Aeronautics Act of 1938 and helped fund the airport's first terminal.
Clark County assumed operation of the airport, laying the groundwork for its growth alongside the postwar expansion of Las Vegas as a resort destination.
A modern terminal was built to accommodate the arrival of jet airliners as Las Vegas tourism accelerated through the 1960s.
On 14 December 2021 the Clark County Commission voted unanimously to rename the airport after former U.S. Senator Harry Reid, who had championed funding for its expansion, while retiring the McCarran name over the senator's history of restrictive and discriminatory immigration positions.
