Airport HistoryEst. 1928

San Diego's airport was dedicated in 1928 as San Diego Municipal Airport–Lindbergh Field, named for Charles Lindbergh after his historic 1927 transatlantic flight in the Spirit of St. Louis, which had been built locally by Ryan Aeronautical. Renamed San Diego International Airport in 2003 for a more corporate-friendly identity, it holds the distinction of being the busiest single-runway airport in the United States, and completed a major new Terminal 1 in 2025 as part of an ongoing multi-phase modernization.

✦San Diego International is the busiest single-runway commercial airport in the United States, packing over 25 million annual passengers through one runway on a compact 663-acre site.

✦The airport's original 'Lindbergh Field' name directly honored Charles Lindbergh, who personally consented to having the airport named after him, given his connection to San Diego's Ryan Aeronautical Company.

Lindbergh Field Dedicated

San Diego Municipal Airport–Lindbergh Field is dedicated on August 16, 1928, with a military flyover, named to honor Charles Lindbergh, whose Spirit of St. Louis was built in San Diego by Ryan Aeronautical for his historic 1927 solo transatlantic flight.

1967

Original Terminal 1 Opens

A single-story Terminal 1 opens on the airport's south side, the facility's first purpose-built passenger terminal.

1979

Terminal 2 Opens

Terminal 2 opens, followed by expansions through the 1980s and early 1990s that add second floors and jet bridges to the terminals.

2003

Renamed San Diego International Airport

The airport officially drops the Lindbergh Field name in favor of San Diego International Airport, seen as a better fit for a major commercial airport's global identity.

2013

The Green Build Opens

A $900 million Terminal 2 expansion known as 'The Green Build' adds 10 new gates, part of a broader modernization push.

2025

New Terminal 1 Phase 1 Opens

A rebuilt Terminal 1 opens its first phase on September 22, 2025, with 19 gates; a second phase is planned for 2028 as part of the airport's ongoing overhaul.
