Airport HistoryEst. 2008

Bengaluru's airport was built from scratch at Devanahalli as a greenfield public-private partnership after years of delay, opening in May 2008 to replace the congested HAL Airport. Renamed for the city's 16th-century founder in 2013, it has since added a second runway and a landmark new terminal, growing into India's third-busiest airport.

Devanahalli Site Selected

In March 1991 the National Airports Authority of India selects Devanahalli, about 30 km north of Bengaluru, as the site for a new airport to replace the congested HAL Airport.

2001
BIAL Formed

After a public-private partnership structure is agreed in May 1999, Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) is incorporated in January 2001 to build and operate the airport.

2008
Airport Opens

Construction, begun 2 July 2005, completes in 32 months; the airport officially opens on 24 May 2008 as India's third greenfield PPP airport, with the first commercial flight (Air India from Mumbai) landing the night before.

2013
Terminal Expansion and Renaming

A ₹1,500 crore expansion completed in December 2013 roughly doubles the terminal to 150,556 m² (raising capacity to 25 million passengers); on 14 December 2013 the airport is officially renamed Kempegowda International Airport after the city's founder.

2019
Second Runway Commissioned

A second runway (09R/27L), capable of handling Code-F aircraft such as the Airbus A380, is commissioned on 6 December 2019.

2022
Terminal 2 Inaugurated

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates Terminal 2 on 11 November 2022; the ₹5,000 crore first phase, styled as a tribute to Bengaluru's 'Garden City' identity, begins domestic operations in January 2023 and international operations in September 2023.

New Long-Haul and A380 Milestones

The airport records a string of firsts: Ethiopian Airlines' first nonstop Bengaluru–Africa link (2019), Air India's first nonstop Bengaluru–North America route to San Francisco (2021), and in 2022 Qantas' first nonstop Bengaluru–Oceania service to Sydney alongside Emirates' first A380 flights to the airport.
