Airport HistoryEst. 1992

Munich Airport opened in 1992 on the Erdinger Moos plain northeast of the city, replacing the overcrowded Munich-Riem Airport in a famous single-night relocation of all flight operations. Named after former Bavarian premier Franz Josef Strauss, who championed the project but died before it opened, it has grown into Germany's second-busiest airport and a key Lufthansa and Star Alliance hub. It is regularly rated among the world's best airports for passenger experience.

✦Munich Airport has its own on-site brewery and beer garden, Airbräu, one of very few airports in the world to brew its own beer.

✦The move from the old Munich-Riem Airport to the new site in 1992 was carried out in a single overnight operation nicknamed the "lightning move."

✦Terminal 2 is a unique joint venture directly co-owned by Lufthansa rather than run solely by the airport operator.

Decision to build a new airport

Bavarian and federal authorities decide to build an entirely new airport on the Erdinger Moos marshland northeast of Munich to replace the overcrowded Munich-Riem Airport.

1980

Construction begins

Construction begins on the new airport site, requiring years of ground stabilization work on the marshy terrain before building could proceed.

1992

Airport opens

Munich Airport opens on May 17 in a single overnight operation that transferred all flights, staff, and equipment from Munich-Riem; it is later named after Franz Josef Strauss.

1997

Star Alliance founded

Lufthansa and partner carriers found the Star Alliance, cementing Munich's role alongside Frankfurt as one of Lufthansa's two main hubs.

2003

Terminal 2 opens

Terminal 2, a joint venture between Munich Airport and Lufthansa built exclusively for Lufthansa and Star Alliance partners, opens.

2015

Skytrax 5-star rating

Munich becomes one of the first airports in Europe to receive a Skytrax 5-star rating for passenger experience.

2016

Terminal 2 satellite opens

The Terminal 2 satellite building opens, adding further gate capacity for Star Alliance flights.

2020

COVID-19 pandemic disruption

The COVID-19 pandemic causes passenger numbers to collapse by more than 80%, forcing the airport to temporarily mothball Terminal 1.
