Airport HistoryEst. 1948

JFK is New York's primary international gateway and one of the world's busiest airports. Originally named Idlewild, it was renamed after President Kennedy's assassination in 1963. Its iconic TWA Flight Center, designed by Eero Saarinen, is a landmark of mid-century modernism.

Idlewild Golf Course Acquired

New York City acquires the Idlewild Golf Course site in Queens to build a new international airport, replacing the overcrowded LaGuardia.

New York International Airport Opens

The airport opens as New York International Airport (nicknamed Idlewild). First commercial flight by American Overseas Airlines to Hurn, England.

Jet Age Arrives at Idlewild

Pan Am launches transatlantic Boeing 707 service, transforming Idlewild into America's gateway to Europe.

1962
TWA Flight Center Opens

Eero Saarinen's swooping TWA terminal opens — considered one of the greatest works of airport architecture. Now a hotel.

1963
Renamed JFK

Following President Kennedy's assassination, the airport is renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport on December 24, 1963.

1970
Boeing 747 Arrives

Pan Am introduces the 747 on the JFK–London route, beginning the wide-body era at the airport.

2001
9/11 Impact

The September 11 attacks originate from JFK and Boston's Logan. All US airspace closes for three days. Aviation security permanently transformed.

Terminal 6 Reconstruction

A $4.2 billion redevelopment of Terminal 6 begins as part of the broader JFK renovation masterplan.
