Airport HistoryEst. 1956

Chengdu Shuangliu traces its roots to 1938, when it was built as a military airfield defending against Japanese bombing raids during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It transitioned to civil aviation in 1956 and grew over subsequent decades into one of mainland China's busiest airports, gaining international-port status in 1995 and a second, A380-capable runway in 2009. Long the primary gateway to Sichuan province and a major transit point for travelers headed to Chengdu's giant panda breeding centers, Shuangliu's role shifted in 2021 when the new Chengdu Tianfu International Airport opened and absorbed most international and long-haul domestic flights, making Chengdu only the third mainland Chinese city (after Beijing and Shanghai) to operate dual international airports.

1938
Built as a wartime military airfield

Established as Chengdu Shuangguisi Airport, the site was used by Republic of China Air Force fighters defending against Japanese air raids during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

1956
Converts to civil aviation

On 12 December 1956 the airfield transitioned to civilian use and was renamed Chengdu Shuangliu Airport, with commercial routes to Beijing, Xi'an and Kunming following in 1957.

1995
Gains international designation

On 30 November 1995 the airport was formally designated Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, building on its 1993 approval as an international port of entry.

2001
Runway extended for wide-body jets

A major 1994-2001 expansion extended the runway to 3,600 meters, enabling Boeing 747-400 operations, alongside a new terminal complex able to handle 3,500 passengers an hour.

2009
Second runway opens

A second runway completed in December 2009 upgraded the airport to handle Airbus A380 operations.

2021
Chengdu Tianfu International Airport opens

The opening of Chengdu Tianfu Airport on 27 June 2021 shifted most international and long-haul domestic flights away from Shuangliu, making Chengdu the third mainland Chinese city with dual international airports, after Beijing and Shanghai.
