Airport HistoryEst. 1927
San Francisco International Airport opened on 7 May 1927 as Mills Field Municipal Airport, on land leased from the estate of Darius Ogden Mills, and was renamed San Francisco Airport in 1931 when the city purchased the site outright. It grew through the jet age into a major transpacific and international gateway, adding its landmark International Terminal Complex in 2000 and becoming a hub for United Airlines. SFO briefly closed after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and on 6 July 2013 it was the site of the first fatal crash of a Boeing 777, Asiana Airlines Flight 214, which struck a seawall short of runway 28L, killing three passengers. The airport is also known for civic and environmental firsts, including the first LEED Gold-certified terminal in the US and an accredited in-airport museum.
The city of San Francisco opened Mills Field Municipal Airport on 7 May 1927, on 150 leased acres south of the city.
A new terminal building opened on 27 August 1954 and became known as the Central Terminal, expanding the airport's passenger capacity for the growing airline industry.
TWA introduced Boeing 707 jet service from SFO in March 1959, and the airport's first jetway was installed that July.
SFO closed on 17 October 1989 following the magnitude 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake and reopened the next morning.
A new $2.4 billion International Terminal Complex opened in December 2000, replacing the older Terminal 2 and becoming, at the time, the largest base-isolated building in the world for earthquake resistance.
On 6 July 2013, Asiana Airlines Flight 214, a Boeing 777-200ER arriving from Seoul, struck a seawall short of runway 28L and crashed on landing. Three passengers were killed and dozens were injured; it was the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 777.
On 23 July 2019, the renovated Terminal 1 reopened as the Harvey Milk Terminal 1, becoming the first airport terminal in the world named after an LGBTQ leader.
