Best use of a long layover

Take BART directly from the International Terminal G station into downtown San Francisco (about 30 minutes) for a walk around the Ferry Building and Embarcadero.

Inside the airport

The International Terminal has the free SFO Museum aviation-history exhibits, a yoga room, and several plaza-side lounges (Centurion Lounge, Chase Sapphire Lounge, United Polaris/Club) with showers for a proper reset.

The Grand Hyatt at SFO, rated Best Airport Hotel in North America at the 2026 World Airport Awards, sits on airport grounds with its own AirTrain stop reaching every terminal — worth it for a real shower and bed, but you'll clear security again on the way back since it's outside the sterile area.

The US has no international-to-international transit zone: even passengers only connecting through SFO to another country must clear full Customs and Border Protection, which means holding a valid US visa or being ESTA-eligible under the Visa Waiver Program — the same requirement as actually entering the US. There is no separate transit visa.
