Leeds Bradford Airport began life in 1931 as the Leeds and Bradford Municipal Aerodrome at Yeadon, a grass airfield used for flying training before growing into a full regional and later international airport. It weathered a wartime role hosting a major Avro aircraft factory, a 1965 terminal fire, and a long period of runway extensions that eventually enabled transatlantic and long-haul-adjacent operations. In recent years ownership has shifted through several private equity owners, culminating in a 2025 majority stake sale to Spain's AENA alongside a large-scale terminal regeneration programme.
The Leeds and Bradford Municipal Aerodrome opens on 17 October 1931 on 60 acres of grassland, operated by the Yorkshire Aeroplane Club on behalf of the Leeds and Bradford Corporations, initially for general aviation and flying training.
North Eastern Airways starts the airport's first scheduled service on 8 April 1935, connecting London to Newcastle and Edinburgh via Yeadon.
Civil flights resume after wartime military use, during which Avro had operated a large shadow factory at the site producing thousands of military aircraft including Lancasters.
A new runway opens, but the airport terminal is destroyed by fire the same year; a replacement terminal is completed in 1968.
An extended runway officially opens on 4 November 1984, allowing the airport to handle long-range transatlantic charter operations.
A Concorde charter flight from Air France lands on 2 August 1986, drawing an estimated 70,000 spectators to the airport.
Bridgepoint Capital purchases the airport for £145.5 million in May 2007, ending decades of public ownership.
In December 2025, Spain's national airport operator AENA acquires a 51% stake in Leeds Bradford Airport, becoming its new majority owner amid an ongoing £100m+ LBA:REGEN redevelopment programme targeting net-zero emissions by 2030.
