Airport HistoryEst. 1974

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport was built as a compromise between two rival Texas cities and opened in 1974 as one of the largest airports in the world by land area. It grew into American Airlines' largest hub and one of the busiest airports on Earth by aircraft movements, while also pioneering early automated airport transit. Today it anchors the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex as a global connecting point between the United States, Latin America, and beyond.

✦DFW covers roughly 17,200 acres, making it larger in land area than the island of Manhattan.

✦AirTrans, which opened with the airport in 1974, was one of the first automated people-mover systems at any airport in the world.

✦The 1985 crash of Delta Flight 191 led directly to the U.S. rollout of Terminal Doppler Weather Radar and wind shear detection systems now standard at major airports.

✦DFW is the largest hub for American Airlines, the world's largest airline by fleet size.

✦The airport sits atop part of the Barnett Shale gas formation, and natural gas wells have operated on airport property.

1969

Construction begins

After decades of rivalry over air service, Dallas and Fort Worth agree to jointly build a new regional airport, and construction begins on a site between the two cities.

1973

AirTrans people mover debuts

The AirTrans automated guideway transit system begins operating ahead of the airport's opening, one of the first automated people-mover systems at any airport.

1974

Airport opens

DFW opens on January 13, replacing Dallas Love Field and Fort Worth's Greater Southwest International Airport as the region's main commercial airport.

1981

American Airlines builds its hub

American Airlines relocates its headquarters to the area and builds up hub operations at DFW, which becomes its largest hub.

1985

Delta Flight 191 crash

Delta Air Lines Flight 191 crashes on approach during a microburst wind shear event, killing 137 people and spurring nationwide investment in wind shear detection technology.

2005

Terminal D and Skylink open

The international Terminal D and the automated Skylink train system open, replacing the original AirTrans system and modernizing the airport's infrastructure.

2013

American-US Airways merger

American Airlines and US Airways merge, and the enlarged American Airlines makes DFW one of its largest and most important hubs.

2014

Wright Amendment restrictions expire

Long-standing federal flight restrictions on nearby Dallas Love Field fully expire, reshaping competitive dynamics in the region.
