Airport HistoryEst. 1988

Brisbane Airport began in 1925 as the modest Eagle Farm Aerodrome and relocated in the late 1980s to its current Moreton Bay site in time for World Expo '88. Corporatized under a 50-year lease in 1997, it has grown into Australia's third-busiest airport, completing a new parallel runway in 2020 as part of a AU$1.1 billion project, and marked its centenary in 2025.

✦Brisbane's new parallel runway, completed in 2020, is positioned far enough from the original runway to allow near-simultaneous independent operations, effectively doubling the airport's runway capacity.

✦The 'Future BNE' program, announced in the early 2020s, commits an estimated AU$5 billion toward a new third terminal and major refurbishments through the 2030s.

1925

Eagle Farm Aerodrome Established

The Commonwealth Government establishes Eagle Farm Aerodrome on 36 hectares of former agricultural land in April, marking Brisbane's first purpose-built airport.

1928

First Trans-Pacific Flight Lands

The 'Southern Cross' completes the first trans-Pacific flight and lands at Eagle Farm before a crowd of an estimated 25,000 people.

1988

Airport Relocates for World Expo '88

The airport relocates roughly 5km north to its current Moreton Bay site; the old Eagle Farm site closes in March as operations shift to coincide with World Expo '88.

1995

International Terminal Opens

A new International Terminal opens on September 5, officially opened by Prime Minister Paul Keating.

1997

Airport Corporatized

Brisbane Airport Corporation purchases the airport for AU$1.4 billion under a 50-year lease as part of federal airport privatization.

2020

New Parallel Runway Opens

A new parallel runway opens in July after an AU$1.1 billion, near-decade-long construction project, enabling near-simultaneous independent operations with the main runway.

2025

Airport Marks Its Centenary

Brisbane Airport celebrates 100 years since Eagle Farm's establishment, having grown into Australia's third-busiest airport.
