The site of today's Vienna International Airport in Schwechat began life as a Luftwaffe military airfield, with construction starting in 1938 after Austria's annexation into Nazi Germany. British occupation forces reopened it for civilian flights in 1946, and Austrian authorities formally launched it as the country's civil airport on 14 June 1954, eventually taking over fully from Vienna's older Aspern airport once Schwechat's second runway opened in 1977. Home hub of Austrian Airlines since the carrier's founding in 1957, Vienna grew into a key link between Western and Central/Eastern Europe and now handles roughly 30 million passengers a year through its landmark, if famously over-budget, Terminal 3/Skylink complex.
Construction of a military airfield at Schwechat began in May 1938, shortly after Austria's annexation into Nazi Germany; it served as a Luftwaffe pilot-training base and aircraft-factory site during the Second World War.
Following postwar British administration and a gradual handover to Austrian authorities, Vienna Airport formally opened as a civilian airport on 14 June 1954.
Austrian Airlines was founded and established Vienna as its home hub, a role the carrier still holds as the airport's dominant network airline.
A second runway opened at Schwechat, and Vienna's older Aspern airport, in operation since 1912, closed the same year as its flight paths conflicted with the expanded Schwechat operations.
The airport operating company was partially privatized through a stock listing, with the Austrian state, the City of Vienna and Lower Austria retaining large shareholdings.
The Skylink terminal complex opened in 2012 after construction that ran from 2004, with costs rising from an original budget of roughly €400 million to around €850 million.
Austria's Federal Administrative Court approved construction of a long-planned third runway in 2018 after a lengthy legal battle with environmental groups; the airport later shelved the project in late 2025.
