Ride the City Airport Train (CAT, 16 minutes non-stop to Wien Mitte) or the cheaper S7 suburban train (about 25 minutes) into the Innere Stadt and walk around St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Graben.

Inside the airport

There's no hotel inside the secure zone, but the NH Vienna Airport Conference Center sits within walking distance of the terminal for a proper landside stay between connections.

Leaving the airport requires visa-free eligibility or a valid Schengen visa; a short list of nationalities need an airport transit visa even to change planes airside without entering. Flag: as with the rest of Schengen, the EU's ETIAS authorization requirement for visa-exempt travelers remains delayed and was not yet enforced as of mid-2026 — check current status before travel.
