Airport HistoryEst. 2006
Suvarnabhumi Airport is Bangkok's principal international gateway and one of the world's busiest airports, opening in September 2006 after decades of delayed planning to replace the ageing Don Mueang Airport. Its soaring glass-and-steel terminal and once record-setting control tower made it an architectural landmark, though its early years were marked by construction controversies and a dramatic week-long shutdown during 2008 political unrest. It has since expanded steadily and today is served by more airlines than almost any other airport in the world.
The Second Bangkok International Airport Company was established to implement the long-delayed airport project, decades after the site was first proposed.
The airport opened for full domestic and international commercial service on 28 September 2006, replacing Don Mueang as Bangkok's main airport, though its opening days were marred by flight delays and baggage-handling problems.
At 132.2 metres, Suvarnabhumi's air traffic control tower opened as the tallest free-standing control tower in the world, a record it held until 2014.
In January 2007, ruts and cracking were discovered in the east runway, forcing its temporary closure for repairs and raising concerns about rushed construction.
Anti-government protesters occupied the airport from 26 November to 5 December 2008, grounding all flights and stranding an estimated 350,000 passengers in one of the most disruptive airport shutdowns in modern aviation history.
A new midfield satellite terminal, SAT-1, partially opened with 28 additional gates, the airport's first major capacity expansion since it opened.
A third parallel runway opened for full operations on 1 November 2024, raising the airport's hourly capacity from 68 to 94 flights.
By 2025, Suvarnabhumi was reported to be served by 113 airlines, more carriers than any other airport in the world.
