Airport HistoryEst. 1945

Porto's airport opened in 1945 as Pedras Rubras Airport, named for the locality, and served the city for decades before being renamed in 1990 in memory of Francisco de Sá Carneiro, Portugal's prime minister who died in a plane crash near the airport in 1980. A new terminal completed in 2006 helped it win 'Best Airport in Europe' honors the following year, and it passed 10 million annual passengers for the first time in 2017 under operator ANA Aeroportos de Portugal.

✦The airport's original name, Pedras Rubras ('red rocks'), survives informally and in the name of the nearby railway station.
✦It is the main hub of Portuguese carriers TAP subsidiary operations and low-cost carriers serving northern Portugal.

Pedras Rubras Airport Opens

The airport opens near Porto under the name Pedras Rubras, after the local district.

1980
Death of Francisco de Sá Carneiro

Portuguese Prime Minister Francisco de Sá Carneiro dies on 4 December 1980 when his aircraft crashes shortly after takeoff en route from the airport, an event that later gives the airport its name.

1990
Renamed in Honour of Sá Carneiro

The airport is officially renamed Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in memory of the late prime minister.

1998
ANA Concession Granted

On 18 December 1998, under government decree 404/98, operation of the airport is conceded to ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, which becomes responsible for its planning, development and construction.

2006
New Terminal Opens

A new passenger terminal designed by Portuguese architecture firm ICQ, under construction since 2003, becomes operational in the final quarter of 2006.

2007
Best Airport in Europe Award

Airports Council International names Porto 'Best Airport in Europe' in its traffic-size category, recognition tied to the new terminal.

2017
Ten Million Passengers

On 6 December 2017 the airport handles 10 million passengers in a year for the first time in its history.
