Airport HistoryEst. 1926

Atlanta's airport traces back to 1925, when the city leased a former auto racetrack south of downtown to create Candler Field. It grew alongside Delta Air Lines, which made Atlanta its hub in the 1940s, and since 1998 it has been the world's busiest airport by passenger traffic almost every year, a title it still holds.

Candler Field established

Atlanta's mayor leased a former auto racetrack south of the city to create Candler Field, the site that would grow into today's airport.

1941

Delta Air Lines moves headquarters to Atlanta

Delta relocated its headquarters to Atlanta, laying the foundation for the hub operation that would drive the airport's decades of growth.

1971

Renamed for Mayor William B. Hartsfield

The airport was renamed William B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, honoring the longtime mayor credited with championing its expansion.

1980

Midfield Terminal Complex opens

A new midfield terminal complex opened, at the time the largest airport terminal building in the world, positioning Atlanta for major traffic growth.

1998

Becomes world's busiest airport

Atlanta overtook Chicago O'Hare to become the world's busiest airport by passenger traffic, a ranking it has held in nearly every year since.

2003

Renamed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

The airport's name was updated to also honor former Atlanta mayor Maynard Jackson for his role in its expansion.

2006

Fifth runway opens

A fifth runway opened, among the longest commercial runways in North America, further expanding the airport's capacity.

2017

Major power outage

A fire in an underground electrical facility knocked out power across the airport for roughly 11 hours on 17 December 2017, grounding hundreds of flights worldwide.
