Hamad International Airport opened on 30 April 2014 to replace the aging Doha International Airport as Qatar's flagship gateway and the home base of Qatar Airways. Designed by HOK with an 'oasis' theme of wave-shaped roofs and desert planting, it is built partly on reclaimed land in the Persian Gulf and is known for striking public art, including Urs Fischer's giant bronze 'Lamp Bear' sculpture and, more recently, a large indoor tropical garden called The Orchard. The airport played a central logistical role during the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has repeatedly been ranked the world's best airport by Skytrax.
Construction started on the New Doha International Airport project, built partly on reclaimed land east of the existing Doha International Airport, with HOK as architect and Bechtel managing overall development.
After repeated delays from its originally planned 2008 opening, the airport opened to commercial traffic on 30 April 2014 with an initial capacity of 29 million passengers a year, named after the country's former Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
A cable-drawn transit system connecting the terminal's concourses began operating, improving passenger flow through the sprawling terminal complex.
The Doha Metro Red Line's airport branch opened in December 2019, giving the airport direct rail links to downtown Doha ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
Hamad International was named World's Best Airport by Skytrax for the first time, a title it went on to win again in 2022 and 2024.
The airport served as the main air gateway for the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar, handling record volumes of international visitors alongside expanded facilities.
A 10,000 m² indoor tropical garden called The Orchard, featuring a 268-meter water feature and dining and retail space, opened on 10 November 2023 as part of a broader terminal expansion.
A further expansion phase completed in March 2025 added Concourses D and E, pushing the airport's capacity beyond 70 million passengers annually.
