Newcastle International Airport

After a council committee formed in 1929 evaluated 18 sites, the airport opens on 26 July 1935 as Woolsington Aerodrome, inaugurated by the Secretary of State for Air, with a clubhouse, hangar and grass runway costing £35,000.

From 1939 the airfield hosts RAF flying training and, through WWII, serves multiple military functions including Spitfire fighter detachments, a maintenance unit, and air-sea rescue squadrons, before returning to local authority control in 1946.

A runway extension and modern terminal, opened by Prime Minister Harold Wilson on 17 February 1967, mark the airport's transition into a serious civil aviation facility; by 1978 annual traffic nears one million passengers.

An Airport Metro station opens, connecting the airport directly to Newcastle city centre via the Tyne and Wear Metro system.

Emirates begins daily nonstop Dubai service on 7 September 2007, initially with Airbus A330s and later Boeing 777s, becoming a major contributor (an estimated £600 million by 2016) to the regional economy.

The COVID-19 pandemic causes passenger numbers to collapse to about 1.06 million in 2020, down from 5.2 million in 2019; easyJet closes its crew base that August.

In December 2025, Spanish airport operator AENA agrees to purchase 49% of InfraBridge's shareholding in the airport, which would result in a roughly 51-51-24% split between local authorities, InfraBridge, and AENA, pending regulatory approval expected in Q2 2026.
