Athens International Airport opened on 28 March 2001 at Spata, replacing the congested Ellinikon Airport and giving Greece a modern gateway in time for the 2004 Athens Olympics. Built under a 1996 public-private partnership, it is majority-owned by the Greek state (55%) alongside private investors, and named after Eleftherios Venizelos, the early-20th-century Greek statesman. A striking feature of the airport is its on-site Archaeological Museum, displaying artifacts unearthed during the site's construction. Since opening, it has grown into one of Europe's fastest-growing hubs, handling record passenger numbers in the mid-2020s.
Plans for a new Athens airport, first proposed via state company Athens Airport SA in 1978, were revived after Athens lost its bid to host the 1996 Olympics, spurring a push to modernize the city's aviation infrastructure.
A €2.1 billion, 30-year public-private partnership was signed and construction started at Spata, with the Hellenic Republic retaining a majority 55% stake and international investors including Hochtief taking the rest.
Athens International Airport opened on 28 March 2001 (a month later than planned due to surface-access delays), taking over from the capacity-constrained Ellinikon Airport.
A permanent exhibition opened displaying roughly 700 artifacts, spanning the Neolithic to post-Byzantine eras, discovered during excavations of the airport site in 1996-97.
The new airport handled the surge of international traffic for the 2004 Summer Olympics, the event that had originally spurred its construction.
