Airport HistoryEst. 1960

Dubai International opened in 1960 as a modest desert airstrip and was transformed over six decades into one of the world's great aviation hubs, driven by the rise of Emirates airline and Dubai's ambitions as a global crossroads between Europe, Asia and Africa. It has ranked among the world's busiest airports for international passenger traffic for much of the last decade.

✦Emirates, based at DXB, operates one of the largest fleets of Airbus A380 superjumbos of any airline in the world.

1960
Airport opens

Dubai International opened with a single runway and a small terminal, serving as the emirate's first purpose-built airport.

1985
Emirates airline founded

Emirates was launched with backing from the Dubai government and based at Dubai International, eventually becoming the airport's dominant carrier.

2008
Terminal 3 opens

A vast new terminal built exclusively for Emirates opened, at the time one of the largest buildings in the world by floor area.

2014
Becomes world's busiest airport for international traffic

Dubai International overtook London Heathrow to become the world's busiest airport for international passenger traffic, a position it has held in most years since.

2016
Emirates Flight EK521 accident

An Emirates Boeing 777 crash-landed and caught fire after a go-around on 3 August 2016; all 300 people on board evacuated safely, though one firefighter later died battling the blaze.

2024
Record floods disrupt operations

Unprecedented rainfall in April 2024 flooded taxiways and surrounding roads, forcing days of flight cancellations and diversions in one of the airport's most severe weather disruptions on record.
