Airport HistoryEst. 1930
One of India's earliest airports, Chennai's facility at Meenambakkam/Tirusulam was commissioned in 1930 and has grown from a modest airmail stop into a major international gateway serving South India. The airport has weathered a deadly 1984 bombing and severe 2015 monsoon flooding, and completed a large new integrated terminal in 2023.
The airport is commissioned at Meenambakkam, becoming one of India's earliest civil airports, building on airmail service that Tata Air Mail had begun between Karachi and Madras in 1915.
Aviation pioneer J.R.D. Tata's scheduled flight arrives, marking one of the airport's first official passenger/mail flight services.
Management of the airport transfers to national airport authorities, formalizing its role within India's growing civil aviation network.
A bomb blast at the airport kills 33 people; the terminal building is subsequently rebuilt.
A dedicated international terminal is added, following a new domestic terminal opened at Tirusulam in 1985.
