Airport HistoryEst. 1982

Abu Dhabi's modern international airport dates to 2 January 1982, when it opened to replace the smaller original field (now Al Bateen Airport). Its most consequential recent chapter began with the Midfield Terminal project, first announced in 2009 and beset by over a decade of delays and a cancelled contract before finally opening in phases from 1 November 2023 as "Terminal A." On 31 October 2023 the UAE president ordered the entire airport renamed Zayed International Airport after the country's founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, with the change taking formal effect on 9 February 2024. Designed by architects Kohn Pedersen Fox with a dune-inspired roof and an X-shaped, four-pier layout, the new terminal was named the world's most beautiful airport at the 2024 Prix Versailles awards and now serves as Etihad Airways' primary hub.

✦Terminal A's roof, inspired by desert sand dunes, both defines the building's look and helps shade it to cut energy use.

✦The terminal is laid out as an X-shape with four piers each themed around a natural element — desert, sea, city and oasis.

✦It houses a 22-meter art installation, Sana Al Nour, made of 1,632 glass panels evoking traditional Islamic barjeel wind towers.

✦At around 780,000 sq m, Terminal A is one of the largest single airport terminal buildings in the world.

✦In December 2024 it was named the world's most beautiful airport at the Prix Versailles awards, held at UNESCO's Paris headquarters.

✦The rename from Abu Dhabi International to Zayed International was announced in October 2023 but only took formal legal effect in February 2024 — the two dates are often conflated.

1982

Modern Abu Dhabi International Airport opens

The airport officially opened on 2 January 1982 as Abu Dhabi International Airport, replacing an earlier, smaller field that became Al Bateen Airport.

2012

Midfield Terminal construction contract signed

A construction contract for the roughly 742,000 sq m Midfield Terminal Building was signed on 27 June 2012, with the project — first announced in 2009 — targeted for completion in 2017; it went on to suffer years of delays and a 2021 contractor cancellation before finally being finished.

2023

Terminal A opens in phases

The long-delayed Midfield Terminal, rebranded Terminal A, opened for airlines in three stages between 1 and 14 November 2023, with Etihad Airways moving its operations there on 9 November.

2024

Officially renamed Zayed International Airport

Announced on 31 October 2023 by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, the airport's renaming after founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan took formal effect on 9 February 2024.

2024

Named world's most beautiful airport

On 3 December 2024, Terminal A won the top prize at the Prix Versailles international architecture awards, held at UNESCO's Paris headquarters, for its dune-inspired sculptural roof designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox.

Record passenger growth

The airport handled about 29.5 million passengers in 2024, a 28.1% increase over the prior year, as traffic ramped up in the new terminal.
