Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, about a 25-30 minute drive from the airport, is free to enter (modest dress required; robes/abayas are loaned at the door) and is the standard top pick for a long Abu Dhabi layover.

Inside the airport

Zayed International's Terminal A (opened November 2023) houses Etihad's The First Lounge and The Business Lounge, plus the airside AUHotel transit hotel offering 6/12/24-hour rest packages to connecting passengers holding a valid onward boarding pass.

AUHotel operates inside the terminal's transit area itself, bookable in 6/12/24-hour blocks without clearing immigration; landside, Premier Inn Abu Dhabi International Airport is a short drive away for passengers who do leave the secure zone.

The UAE grants visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry (30-90 days depending on nationality) to a wide range of passports — EU, UK, US, Australia and much of Asia and the Gulf among them — and those travelers can leave the airport freely. Travelers without that eligibility generally need a pre-arranged UAE visa (often organized through the operating airline, e.g. Etihad's stopover program) to exit the airport, though most nationalities can still transit airside without one for a single connection under 24 hours.

Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of United Arab Emirates before travel.

Practical Tips for Your AUH Layover

Use left-luggage storage at Zayed International Airport if you plan to leave the terminal — most airports offer coin lockers or staffed storage near arrivals.

Get a United Arab Emirates eSIM before your layover so you have data for maps and translation the moment you land.

Download offline maps for Abu Dhabi in advance — useful if you leave the terminal and connectivity is patchy.

Always allow at least 3 hours buffer before your next departure when leaving the airport — immigration queues are unpredictable.
