Construction Begins

Singapore decides to build a new international airport on reclaimed land at Changi, replacing the congested Paya Lebar Airport.

1981
Terminal 1 Opens

Changi Airport opens on July 1, 1981 with Terminal 1. Paya Lebar Airport closes to commercial traffic.

1990
Terminal 2 Opens

A second terminal opens, doubling capacity. Changi begins its rise as Asia's premier hub airport.

2008
Terminal 3 Opens

A third terminal opens, featuring a butterfly garden and extensive retail. Changi cements its reputation for passenger experience.

2017
Terminal 4 Opens

A highly automated Terminal 4 opens with self-service check-in, bag drop, and immigration — a glimpse of aviation's future.

2019
Jewel Changi Opens

The $1.7 billion Jewel complex opens — a 10-storey mixed-use facility featuring the world's tallest indoor waterfall (40 meters), 280 shops, and gardens.

2023
Terminal 5 Approved

Singapore approves the massive Terminal 5 expansion, which will double Changi's capacity to 135 million passengers annually.
