Larnaca International Airport emerged hastily in 1975 after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus left the island's main airport, Nicosia International, stranded inside the UN buffer zone. Built on a former British military airfield, it grew from prefabricated terminal buildings into Cyprus's principal international gateway, gaining a state-of-the-art new terminal in 2009 under operator Hermes Airports.
Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Nicosia International Airport falls within the UN buffer zone and ceases civilian operation, prompting the hasty development of Larnaca as its replacement.
The airport opens on February 8 with minimal, prefabricated terminal facilities; Cyprus Airways and Olympic Airways operate the first flights using Viscount and YS-11 aircraft.
A tender is issued to extend the runway and expand capacity beyond the airport's original 1975 design, including a new control tower and fire station.
Hermes Airports, a France-led consortium, completes a €650 million upgrade under its concession to build, operate and manage Larnaca and Paphos airports.
A state-of-the-art terminal opens on November 7 with 16 jetways, 67 check-in counters and capacity for 7.5 million passengers a year, replacing the original 1975 facilities.
