Manchester Airport began as a grass airfield at Ringway, southwest of the city, with construction starting in November 1935 and an official opening on 25 June 1938, when KLM launched the first scheduled service two days later. Requisitioned as RAF Ringway during the Second World War for parachute training and aircraft production, it reopened to civil traffic afterward and grew steadily to become Britain's third-busiest airport and the busiest outside the London system. Today it is owned by Manchester Airports Group (MAG), a company held by Greater Manchester's ten metropolitan councils alongside the Australian investor IFM Investors, and serves around 32 million passengers a year across roughly 200 destinations. Its history spans a 1985 Boeing 737 fire that reshaped UK cabin-safety rules, a second runway opened in 2001 after a high-profile protest campaign, and a long run as home to a retired British Airways Concorde.
Manchester's municipal airport at Ringway officially opened on 25 June 1938; KLM began the first scheduled service two days later, on 27 June.
A purpose-built terminal opened featuring what is described as the first covered airport passenger piers in Europe, modernising the airport as traffic grew.
The airport was formally renamed Manchester International Airport as it consolidated its position as the UK's leading regional gateway.
