History

Emirates was established in March 1985 with backing from the Dubai government, after Gulf Air scaled back services to the emirate, and commenced flights in October 1985 using aircraft leased with assistance from Pakistan International Airlines. It expanded rapidly through the 1990s and 2000s, adding Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s and consolidating operations at Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3 in 2008. Emirates became the world's largest operator of both the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777, taking delivery of the final A380 ever built in 2021.

Current Operations

Emirates flies an all-widebody, long-haul network from its Dubai hub to roughly 148 destinations in about 80 countries across six continents, operating exclusively as a full-service international carrier with no domestic or short-haul flying. The airline has declined to join any of the three global alliances and remains independent under parent The Emirates Group. Recent developments include large outstanding orders for Boeing 777X and additional Airbus A350 aircraft, alongside a long-term plan announced in 2024 to eventually shift operations to the new Al Maktoum International Airport.
