Perth Airport grew out of a WWII RAAF base at Guildford, opening to civil traffic in 1944 despite military objections, and was renamed Perth Airport in 1953 after gaining international status. Privatized under a 99-year lease in 1997, it has expanded through multiple terminals into Western Australia's principal gateway and is now Australia's fourth-busiest airport, with a third runway under construction as of the mid-2020s.
Despite military objections, civil services by Qantas Empire Airways and Australian National Airways begin in 1944 at the wartime RAAF Station Guildford site; Qantas makes its inaugural international flight to Ceylon on 17 June 1944.
The airport gains international status in September 1952 and is renamed from Guildford Aerodrome to Perth Airport in March 1953.
A combined domestic/international terminal opens in 1962, though the arrival of Boeing 747 services by 1971 soon exposes its capacity limits.
A new international terminal, built 1984-1986 at a cost of A$26 million, officially opens on 25 October 1986; its control tower becomes the tallest in Australia.
In July 1997 Perth Airport is privatized under a 99-year lease as part of the federal government's national airport privatization program.
A new Terminal 2 for regional services officially opens on 28 February 2013, featuring at-grade access and 14 aircraft bays.
Emirates commences Airbus A380 services to Perth in 2015, following a 2005 cross-runway upgrade that enabled A380 operations.
A dedicated airport railway line opens on 9 October 2022, connecting the airport to the Perth metropolitan rail network.
As part of an approved A$5 billion investment in terminal consolidation and expansion, construction of a third runway (3,000m × 45m) begins in December 2025, targeted for completion in 2029.
